The Art of Equestrian Life

Susan Sponenberg

Born in Northeast Pennsylvania, Susan has never made a secret out of her passion for horses.  From an early age, whenever able she would incorporate horses into school projects and personal activities.  She did so with an enthusiasm that still guides her brush today.

Educated at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Susan has pursued her passion throughout her entire career.  After earning her degree, she traveled to Prolock Vale Riding School in England where she earned her Associate Instructor Riding Certificate.  While there, she painted horses belonging both to the staff and the school.

Upon returning to the United State, she began teaching at Luzerne County Community College with other notable animal artists including George Luther Schelling and Robert Kray.  As a painter, she specializes in fox hunting, racing, and protraits.  Susan boasts quite a list of accomplishments including membership on the associate level of the American Academy of Equine Art.

Susan's talents have caught the eye of many members of the equine sporting world.  From mural work at Yonker's Raceway to the Kentucky State specialty license plate to cover art for the Chronicle of the Horse, The Equine Marketer, The Virginian, and Spur, Susan's work can be found in a variety of venues.  She has also done commission work for the United States Pony Club, Chapman Farms - owner of Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones - Radnor International Three Day Event, Fair Hill International, and well known horsemen such as Mr. Tim Rooney and Anne Thorington.

Susan's work has been spotlighted in several galleries and publishers.  She has over 35 prints on the market and is represented by Martie Helwig Fine Art, Delphine Gallery, Beresford Gallery, The Tack Room, The Artful Framer, and Chadds Ford Gallery.  She has also exhibited her work at the Museum of Hounds and Hunting in Leesburg, VA.  She recently exhibited and sold paintings through the Masters of Foxhounds of America centennial travelling exhibit sponsored by the Crossroads Gallery.

Although busy with teaching, trade fairs, and a full-time career as an artist, Susan still finds time to ride her horse Gjonah.  He provides her with a daily reminder of the passion and enthusiasm that she still holds for the focus of her life's work:  the noble horse.
